When I arrived in Leiden, I decided to try something new, a new sport that I’d never really played before. So I went in search of a team and discovered the University Lacrosse team – the Leiden Lynxes, and decided to go along to a training session. I have to say this was probably the best decision I made during my whole year abroad! The girls in the team have become some of my best friends and they made me feel so welcome. I’m sure it was the same for many year abroaders, that it is quite difficult to interact with and get to know native students, but being the only non-Dutch person on the team, it was great to finally get to know the Dutch girls well. We had training and socials every week, and played against other Dutch university teams throughout the season, which meant we travelled to a different city nearly every weekend. There is definitely a certain bond you form with people when you’re part of a sports team and they were a great support system during the year. At the end of the season, to celebrate not coming last in our league (a big achievement!), we went on a road trip into Germany which was one of the highlights of my whole year. I’m so grateful to them for making me feel so welcome, and I would definitely recommend trying something new when going abroad, if only for the friends!!
