Like most large cities Sydney hosts festivals and events throughout the year. They celebrate everything from Chinese New Year and Mardi Gras to ‘healthiness and happiness’, which became the tagline for this year’s 5k Colour Run that took place in Sydney’s CBD. Nevertheless, the event I have enjoyed most this year was a local event, independently run by the community and council of Newtown; a suburb in Sydney’s Inner-west.
Newtown festival essentially began as a street party, and over the years has become an annual event accommodating for approximately 90,000 visitors. This day festival endorses local bands, shops, and restaurants by filling the local park with stages and stalls for street venders and performers alike. This festival was an incredibly enjoyable day which successfully showcased Newtown’s community. It also introduced me to a new area of the city which, from November, became the suburb I lived in for several months over the summer.
