I feel really lame admitting this but the first thought I had when I initially saw this place was “oh my god Health and Safety in the UK would have a field day.”
My favourite place is a bridge in the centre of town (pictured above). It partly overlooks the train station and partly overlooks the main road. Once you’re actually on it, you can see that in reality it is way less dangerous than it appears. In any case there does happen to be a small sign next to it warning you that you might die, so don’t say they didn’t warn us I guess.
I really like this place because I like the fact that everyone uses the bridge for something different:
Couples have dinner dates on it and watch the sunset, friends come to chat, prepubescent boys come to smoke and heckle women (and one time some threw sweets at me), homeless people like to camp out near the bottom, some people sit on the bridge for pre-drinks although this is highly unrecommended.
For me personally, I use the bridge as a place to sit and eat ice cream and think and watch the world go by. Even though the temperature the past few weeks hasn’t exceeded 5 degrees, I seem to have developed a routine of buying an ice cream from the shop round the corner (which sells all these incredible homemade flavours for 1 Euro) and then going to sit on the bridge for a couple of hours.
Maybe it’s my underlying god complex at work, but I simply cannot describe to you the feelings of joy and satisfaction that I experience when I’m sitting up on the highest point of the bridge looking down at all the people below me going about their lives. Perhaps that’s the real reason I like coming here so much – makes me feel invincible.
